everyone knows that not all clubs are created equal. sometimes it's the venue itself, sometimes it's the sound system, sometimes its actually the people that end up showing up and whatever's the "cool" venue at the moment.

that being said, as a band we've not always been in agreement as to which clubs we should and shouldn't play. There are clubs in deep ellum that are "A-list" clubs and some that are definately "B-list"

the A's are pretty obvious: gypsy tea room (either side), trees, curtain club, clearview, the door.

most of the others in deep ellum are probably going to get lumped in the B-list section.

so at the risk of offending club owners here's my list of my favorite B-list clubs as of late...

The Cavern - actually located in lower greeville, as of late, this has been my favorite anti-venue. The stage is super small with barely any lighting, and there's not even a sound system available. That being said it's the ultimate equalizer as a club. On a stage like that, it's the songs that matter, not the lighting or what the band is wearing. it's total DYI Indie goodness. bonus: the barstaff is super friendly, they have 2004 golden tea downstairs, two kick-ass lukeboxes, and a make-out room upstairs. all of this equals a good time.

Liquid Lounge - if you can ignore the indie-rock fashion show that is their outside porch, you can really enjoy this club. it's got a half-height stage with a fairly decent sound system. The sound guy is very nice and the closet behind the sound booth is a great "green room" if you're feeling a bit anti-social before the show. bonus: wednesday night accoustic chaos hosted by whoever can be a very fun way to lose sleep in the middle of the week, also a great way for newer artists to get their foot in the door of the dallas club scene. also if you're lucky Whit, one of the friendliest guys in DE will be bartending. he's great.

most of the other b clubs fall somewhere in the middle: galaxy club, coyote ugly, dada, etc. they're an okay club in most respects, but they're just not an 'it' club right now. give it time and they may.

obviously no list is complete without mentioning who's at the bottom of the heap.

Club Indigo - i'm sorry, whether it's the horrible sound, or the sound guy making funny comments over the main speakers during band's sets, from all accounts, this club has a long way to go. i've yet to find a band that has something good to say about this club.
